Arrival Pack
Oman desert highway Muscat Salalah road trip

One of the great drives of the Arabian Peninsula. 1,020 km through Oman’s interior desert. During Khareef, you arrive to a landscape so green and misty you question whether it’s the same country.

Two Routes

Inland (Nizwa/Adam/Haima/Thumrait): ~1,020 km, ~10h. Mostly dual carriageway. Single lane Haima–Thumrait needs caution.

Coastal (Sur/Ras Al Jinz/Duqm): ~1,300 km, 14–16h. Dramatic scenery: turtle beaches, pink lagoons. Best as multi-day.

Recommendation: Coastal south (2 days, overnight Duqm), inland back. Best of both.

Inland Stage by Stage

Muscat–Nizwa (170 km, 2h): Over Hajar Mountains. Nizwa fort and souq worth a stop. Fuel up.

Nizwa–Haima (400 km, 4h): Long flat desert. Spaced-out fuel. Carry water/snacks.

Haima: Midpoint overnight. Basic hotels. Safe rest stop.

Haima–Thumrait (350 km, 3.5h): Single carriageway. Heavy trucks. Do NOT drive at night.

Thumrait–Salalah (80 km, 1h): Dual carriageway into Dhofar Mountains. During Khareef: desert → mist, green, cool within km.
