One of the best parts of living in Muscat is how quickly you can shift from city routine to sea, mountains, wadis, or a slower coastal day. Weekend life here is less about packed entertainment calendars and more about access to beautiful places within a manageable drive.
This guide is for the kind of weekend ideas people actually use once they live here: easy beaches, scenic drives, simple day trips, and low-friction escapes.
Muscat might feel like a quiet city during the work week, but weekends here are when it really opens up. Within an hour or two of the city, you have wadis with natural swimming pools, mountain drives with views that still stop us in our tracks, desert camping under skies with more stars than you’ve ever seen, and a coastline that seems to go on forever. Here are the places we keep going back to.

Wadi Day Trips — Our Favourites Within Two Hours
- Wadi Shab: 1.5–2hrs, 140km. Requires boat crossing (OMR 1). Start early — gets hot.
- Wadi Bani Khalid: 2.5–3hrs, 200km. Easiest accessible wadi. Free entry. Beautiful pools.
- Wadi Dayqah Dam: 45 mins. Great for families. Lake views.
- Bimmah Sinkhole: 1.5hrs. Unusual geological feature. Easy swim.
Wadi Shab is the one everyone talks about, and for good reason. The hike to the pools takes about 45 minutes, you cross a small boat for OMR 1, and the turquoise water at the end is worth every step. Go early — by 10am in cooler months, the carpark fills up.
Beaches — Weekend Activities Muscat Near the Coast
