Arrival Pack
Ride-hailing app being used in Muscat

Taxi and ride apps are useful in Muscat, especially in your first days or weeks. They are the easiest bridge between arrival and full setup.

But they are not a perfect substitute for having your own car long term, especially if your life involves school runs, multiple errands, or regular cross-city travel. This guide explains where ride apps work well and where their limitations start to show.

Forget Uber — it doesn’t exist in Oman. But there are reliable alternatives, and you’ll want at least two of them on your phone before you even land. Here’s what actually works for getting around Muscat without your own car.

Careem is the app most expats default to, and it’s generally reliable. OTaxi is the government-backed option — cheaper fares but sometimes fewer drivers available in off-peak hours. Download both before you arrive. For the airport pickup on your first day, book a Careem in advance — the taxi queue at Muscat Airport can be chaotic during peak flight arrivals.

Best use cases

Can You Survive in Muscat Without a Car?

Technically yes in Qurum, Al Khuwair, Shatti. Practically difficult — Muscat is not pedestrian-friendly. No metro, no tram, limited bus routes. Most expats get a car within 3 months.

Hidden Details About Every Ride App Muscat Oman Expats Use

Realistically, you’ll need your own car within a few weeks. Muscat isn’t a city you can navigate long-term by taxi alone. But for your first days, Careem and OTaxi will get you everywhere you need to go.
